MIAMI — Kodak Black, the South Florida rapper, was released from jail on Wednesday following a federal judge's decision to sentence him to time served for a probation violation. However, a drug trafficking case from 2022 remains unresolved.
U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez in Miami delivered the sentence nearly two weeks after a drug possession charge against the rapper, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was dismissed in Broward County, according to court documents.
Earlier this month, Broward County Circuit Judge Barbara Duffy ruled that prosecutors couldn't dispute the fact that Kapri had obtained an oxycodone prescription from a pharmacy. In December, Plantation police arrested Kapri after discovering him asleep at the wheel with white powder near his mouth. Though initial tests indicated the presence of cocaine, subsequent lab analysis revealed it to be oxycodone, for which Kapri had a valid prescription obtained in July 2022.
This arrest constituted a violation of his probation from a separate case, leading to his incarceration in Miami for two months.
In 2022, Kapri faced charges of trafficking in oxycodone and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was released on bond with conditions including regular drug testing. In early 2021, after missing a drug test and subsequently testing positive for fentanyl, Kapri was mandated to undergo a 30-day drug rehabilitation program. Later in June, a warrant for his arrest was issued when he failed to appear for another drug test.
In January 2021, former President Donald Trump commuted a three-year federal prison sentence that Kapri had received for falsifying documents to purchase firearms. At the time of the commutation, Kapri had served roughly half of his sentence.
Under his stage name Kodak Black, Kapri has achieved considerable commercial success, selling over 30 million singles. His track "Super Gremlin" notably peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2022.
